Install and Configure IBM Installation Manager

Introduction

The IBM Installation Manager (IBMIM) is a packaging technology that supports a wide range of IBM Software product installations.

The IBMIM can be configured as a one-product installation and packaged with a software offering. The alternative and more general version of the IBM Installation Manager product described here can be configured to access and process multiple repositories leading to an ability to simultaneously install multiple products.

Note: This write-up describes an installation on a Microsoft Windows 2008 Server. There are a few differences in a LINUX-based installation including filesystem and file names not described here.

The installation follows this flow:

  1. Working with the package-contained IBM Installation Manager
  2. Working with the Locally Installed IBM Installation Manager
    • Adding Repositories to the IBM Installation Manager
    • Installing Rational Software using IBM Installation Manager
  3. Next Steps - Using the Rational License Key Server

Working with the Self-Contained Installer

The Main Window for the IBM Installation Manager is displayed showing the options:

In addition Note: and Not available with embedded IBMIM the File and Help menu selections are offered by this version of the IBM IM.

Locate the self-contained installer included with the unpacked image file.

In the following figure, the Windows Explorer as descended the directory tree of the unpacked agent.installer.win32.win32.x86_1.6.2000.20130301_2248 installation image. Note the significant architectural information packed into the product folder name.

This installation is a 32-bit version of the IBM Installation Manager which can successfully be installed and used on a 64-bit Microsoft Windows 2008 Server host.

Launch the install.exe Application which is highlighed in the figure.

Generally in this Microsoft Windows 2008 Server, since the option hasn't been disabled, whenever you execute an application that is capable of system change, you are challenged by User Account Control as to whether you wish to allow this application to change the computer.

Select the Yes option to proceed.
